It's tough to say what might be a good performance increase without seeing an example of the queries running against the table(s). I would expect that splitting off the columns into a separate table might result in a small gain, but, depending on what your queries look like, some other strategies (such as re-defining what your clustering key is) might prove fruitful. However, until I see the type of queries you are issuing (range vs lookup?, heavy OLAP vs heavy OLTP vs. mixed?) it's tough to say...
