8 cores is about where InnoDB stops improving. And, as you found, the mutexes are the main villain. But also, InnoDB has yet to be well tuned for SSDs.

Percona's Xtradb is mostly compatible with InnoDB, and resolves some of the issues you bring up.

innodb_io_capacity should probably be 1000 or more because of your SSDs. (Again Percona may have done a better job.)

(Caveat: I have no stake in Percona, nor have I directly experienced the things I am claiming about xtradb.)
