What is better? A large query? or too many short ones?

That`s what i was wondering, i have a table with about 120 fields(it`s a game server which i programmed it`s db access).
The game server used to read charfiles from txt files, i thought it would be faster with sql, but instead of making it faster, it made it a lot heavier for the processor.
And i came to that question, what is better? one big query which updates 50 fields or a lot of small ones updating 2 or 3 fields each?
