I thought I had it enabled on the client and the server still says it is off. I will check on that.

It is over reasonable internet connections. Normally the query results will be very small (a couple records), but sometimes could be hundreds of records - all text which could be easily compressed.

Compression would also keep me from sending clear-text data over the internet until I get SSL setup.
