Re: is my SELECT speed normal?

Alright I am trying to follow the manual for mysqlslap at:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc//refman/5.5/en/mysqlslap.html

When it says "shell", is that the OS shell (eg Linux shell) or is that the shell I get from typing "mysql" into my OS (and getting a "mysql>" prompt)?

I try to copy the first example command from the manual. If I simply type it into the Linux shell I get an error that says access denied for user 'root'@'local host' (sudo doesn't help). If I type it into the "mysql>" prompt, it doesn't seem to do anything.

I'm obviously missing something basic, but being new at this I'd appreciate some assistance, thanks.
