I would expect something like 2x slowdown due to the copy-on-write activity of LVM, not 6x. However, since you have software raid, there could be less caching than for hardware RAID? The LVM activity may require a lot of arm motion -- this may be the answer.

Turn off LVM except when taking a snapshot?

I assume the drives are configured the same.
