Recommended changes to my.cnf

Hi, our web developer is suggesting we make the following value changes in our my.cnf file. Just wondering if these changes could have any negative impact on our server and/or sites.
max_allowed_packet = 512M
sort_buffer_size = 128M
read_buffer_size = 128M
wait_timeout = 3600
net_read_timeout = 3600
