drop and recreate index in mysql DB

Hi All,
I am trying to load millions of records(innodb) and i'm assuming doping the index while updating the records and recreating the index is best approach please correct me.
and having one doubt is , if i have millions of records in my table and applying index is will impact performance issue ??
