I've had exactly this problem and the same set of questions for about a year now. As far as I can see the answers are:

1. No
2. No
3. No
4. This would be very helpful.

We have changed our overall system to log all inserts/updates independently of our cluster so as to preserve the data in the event of a cluster crash and restart failure. It has happened to us many times. This way we get the high availability of the cluster, but if it crashes we can re-instate the data from our regular backups and independent logging.
