Thanks for your reply.

We did some tweaking that helped the performance (application, queries and database), including the use of temporary tables which helped a lot. But recently we had trouble even running the application due to the high number of connections (104,000) in one day, crunched in the after noon hours.

Connections being refused was the biggest problem although we had increased the max connections accepted.

We aim to continue optimizing but we believe having a cluster may be cheaper as optimizing costs are starting to get high.
