Well I tried tuning the SQL node some more on this setup and managed to get the queries down to a very nice response time. Guess I wasn't quite making the connection somehow that all the join work and such is performed on the SQL node (I have no idea how I was missing this but nonetheless I know better now).

So with that said, if anyone else is having some issues with slow performing queries on a new cluster setup then try tuning the params of the SQL node and you *should* notice a big increase in performance and query response time.
