Not sure if it helps but I just ran into the same problem with a cluster setup I was working on. I noticed it was incredibly slower than a plain vanilla setup. For example one query was taking 4-5 seconds on a plain vanilla setup, but was taking almost 13 seconds on the cluster. However after tuning some parameters on the SQL node quite a bit I have gotten it down to about .5 seconds to return the same query ont he cluster.

So bottom line if you are having speed issues tune your SQL nodes as much as you can.
