5.1 is in beta, and introducing the ability to put non-indexed attributes to disk. Which will save memory for a performance hit.

The calculation you mentioned is very primative, you should search for ndb_size.pl to run accross your existing database, this calculates (not exactly) but pretty close the memory requirements for a database on a per row basis, then you just need to calculate out how much growth your looking at.
