Shared storage is not necessary for MySQL Cluster. It just adds an extra layer of things that can go wrong.

You could, however, have each node use a different volume on the SAN for storage. You'd only be gaining some bandwidth (and incurring increased hardware costs) though.

It's much cheaper to have small RAID setups inside each data node.
