quoting stewart smith.....

let me guess - 32 bit binaries on a 32bit OS?

In this scenario you'll only be able to have each process consume about 3GB of memory.

are you saying that an Intel Xeon CPU with RHEL for example can only use a maximum of 3GB of memory? Then why does the FAQ (http://www.mysql.com/products/database/cluster/faq.html) recommends 16GB of RAM?

Scalability

* Near-linear scalability shown on system where each storage node executed on the following hardware:
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon Processors at 2.8 GHz
Memory: 16GB RAM
HDD: 4 x 73GB SCSI
RAID 1 Controller
Gigabit Ethernet
* For cost-effective scale-out:
o Add more storage nodes (8, 16, 32, etc.) per cluster, or
o Add more CPUs (4, 8, etc.) or
o Add more Memory (16GB, 32GB, etc.) per storage node
