Maybe helpful, maybe not

You could try heartbeat from http://www.linux-ha.org/. It has a resource management ability to keep tabs on a defined server resource on defined servers and will provides failover managmenent accordingly.

Numerous other configuration options are available (including load balancing and defining preferred server hosts for a given server resource) and there appears to be good community support.

Oh.. and it's free and it works :-)
