How to resync the databases after a period of offline

Although we are able to start replication between master and master, it seems impossible to get the databases to resync with each other after a failure of one master.

I'd like to find a procedure to force the databases to replicate regardless of the position of one master. Kind of like a force handshake to reset all the counter and make sure the data are the same across. It seems that when one database is offline for a while for some unknown reasons the "position" of the other master is lost, and they no longer replicate the records after it becomes online again. We can reset the database, but the lost record will never resync, so we now have 2 non-identical databases.

The only way so far that we can reset the database is to make a dump from one and restore it to the other one. This is not a feasible way in the production environment.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Please give a step by step resolution. Thanks.
