I am using a replication scheme similar to what you describe. We have two MySQL servers, each serving as master to the other. It has been working well for us, other than a very recent replication delay issue.
The toolkit that used to be called maatkit, now called Percona Tools, might be some help in monitoring replication. I'm going to be exploring them this evening.
