I opened a question on serverfault a while back about the dump/load vs alter table methods - http://serverfault.com/questions/411673/mysql-upgrade-dump-load-vs-alter-table -- haven't gotten a response as to why dump/load is recommended.

We upgraded terabytes worth of data on 60+ dbs using the alter table method 5.0->5.1, and had no problems at all.

time, load, and disk space requirements (for both the dump and resulting binlogs upon load) made dump/load a very undesirable option
