I opened a question on serverfault a while back about the dump/load vs alter table methods -

We upgraded terabytes worth of data on 60+ dbs using the alter table method 5.0->5.1, and had no problems at all.
time, load, and disk space requirements (for both the dump and resulting binlogs upon load) made dump/load a very undesirable option
