How to understand replication in production?

Hi!

New to this forum. I have developed with LAMP since before LAMP was coined, mostly for Internet.

How can I examine and qualify the quality of replication in an inherited production mysql setup?

My latest contract presents an OSS environment put together by several people while they learned Linux, Apache, mysql and PHP. They are all gone from here and there is little to documentation.

I have been tasked by the CIO examine the current environment, fix those things that are not working right and add 2 more mysql servers to the fold.

Today, I'm examining replication. Two mysql servers are configured to replicate; but, I need to measure the quality of what is actually happening here.

I know how I would set this up ("by the book") and this is not that.

athens mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.43, for unknown-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 5.1
taurus mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.5.23, for Linux (x86_64) using readline 5.1

Please, advise.

Thank you.

~Mike
