relay-bin files not being cleaned up

Group,

I have been running replication for about a year now. The replication part runs fine, but the relay-bin files are not being cleaned up. I read the documentation, but didn't see anything about this problem. I wrote a clean up script to delete any relay-bin older than a week, but this was a castastrophe, a major table ended up missing many rows.

I resynched the slave a month ago, and now there are 248 relay-bin log files starting at 1.

Here's the setup:
Replicating Windows v 5.1 to Linux v 5.5
logging on both master and slave
slave backup does PURGE BINARY LOGS to the current binary log

Any ideas on what is happening here, or where I can get a better understanding of the master slave process?

Thanks,
Vince
