How to upgrade MySQL to 5.5.38 in master-master replication scenario

I need to upgrade MySQL from 5.5.28 to 5.5.38 in a master-master replication scenario. I will be upgrading one at a time. We use MMM. My thoughts were to use MMM and set one server admin offline, shut down MySQL, install new version, run mysql_upgrade, then restart MySQL. My concern is, now what do I do? I don't want the 5.5.38 server to replicate to the 5.5.28 server, but it is ok for the 5.5.28 server to replicate to the 5.5.38 server. I guess my question is, since the servers are in a master-master configuration, how do I keep the 5.5.38 server from replicating to the 5.5.38 server? Do I just run a change_master command. Thanks in advance for any insight.
