It has always been the case that a newer Slave can replicate from an older Master. (I cannot otherwise verify specific question.)

The patch level should not matter.

See the online manual (5.6) for setting up replication. If there are any caveats, they should be on the 5.6 pages.

* If you are using AES_ENCRYPT, see the 5.6.17 Changelog.
* There may have been changes to how you turn on/off various logs.
* TIMESTAMP and DATETIME have changed; see 5.6.4 and 5.6.6 Changelogs.
