You can do it. We have done it for years.

We setup master <-> master replication between servers located on west coast USA to Tokyo. It worked, but after a while the bandwidth between the two servers was just too much and could not keep up. The ping time between the two servers was about 180 - 200ms.

We setup a 2nd datacenter so they could be closer. Now they are about 3ms away and the datacenter's are connected via fiber link.

Our master <-> master replication is now real-time and we have no problems keeping them in sync.

For best results, do all writes to one of them with your DR site just there in the event of a failure.
