Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE)

Hello All,
I've asked this question on the main mysql mailing list but to no avail.
I've almost pulled what hair I have left out on this one =].

I keep getting the 'Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE)' error on my slave.
(Actually I get this error a lot in other scenarios too but I've managed to find a work around for those)

This data was converted from a 3.x database (don't ask me what specific version b/c I don't remember but I think it was 3.23). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
