Thanks for you response it's much appreciated.

I agree and think taking incremental backups from the slave make sense. We will be running semi-syncronous replication which increases the odds of our slaves containing the latest information.

Our incremental backups will be taken every 15 minutes. I'm thinking of perhaps flushing the logs and backing up the binary log on the master every 10 or even 5 minutes. Then our worst case scenario would be losing 5 minutes worth of data. Is there any thoughts on doing a flush logs every 5 minutes ? Any other caveats worth mentioning ?
