Will BACKUP-AND-APPLY-LOG will work the same way if backups are taken form Master or Slave only difference being Slave will be stopped when apply-log operation is done?

After taking backup on Slave, Bin log position shown using Show Master Status\G increases a bit .Normally when Slave recieve changes from Master in Replication, it does not create any bin logs.Please explain this behaviour.

My Question is whether there is any drawback of using BACKUP-AND-APPLY-LOG for backup on Slave.
