Rendering Copied files useless?

In a recent security meeting a member of our upper-level IT department told us not to store sensitive information in MySQL because if someone obtained a copy of the database files they could easily put those files on their own server and view their contents with very little effort.

Is this true, and if so, is there a way to only allow this data to be queried from a specific MySQL server?

I am about to start a new project and they are pushing for me to use the Oracle server we already have, but I would rather secure the MySQL box I run. Is this possible?
