Password Encoding/Algorithm on 4.11.1

I'm using mysql 4.1.11 max for PPC, and I have created a user table that contains a password field created with the password() funciton. What I don't get is the Hashing algorithm/encoding used. I've browsed the docs and haven't found a definitive answer, and i've also found that there is a difference b/w the linux side and the ppc side.

How can i find out the hashing algorithm/encoding for my installation?

Version:
mysql Ver 14.7 Distrib 4.1.11, for apple-darwin7.8.0 (powerpc)
