Backup locks linux server

I am running a mysql 5.0 server on a redhat linux 3.0 machine. I have Administrator 1.19.

My problem is when I try to execute a backup using the saved backup profiles the KDE desktop lockups up. I am trying to backup to a mounted USB drive for safety. I would backup to a partition on the raid but I do not have enough room for backing up portions of my 70 gig of data. The USB drive is a teac 160 external. Even worse, when the linux server locks up, I can not telnet to the server nor can I access the mysql from my other local computers using administrator or query brower. Also my samba shared directories are locked out.

Any thought or suggestions?

I would like to put these profiles in a script and run a cron job at night. But I am new to linux and have to learn that function

thank you
