newbie question about mysqldump command

Halo everybody!
Yesterday I started playing for the first time with MySql so I have a quick (and somehow stupid) question. I want to export a database from my unix server in order to make a backup. I saw in several sites that in order to do that I'll have to use the command 'mysqldump'. So my question is about the term 'dump', that confuses me. If I use this command except exporting the db, will it also delete (dump) my original database? Moreover, in order to export the db, will I have to stop the httpd deamon?
Thank you in advance and sorry if I started the topic in the wrong thread! :D

edit: mmm, I suppose I should have opened this topic in the Newbie thread.
