The log files do not (can not) include all critical errors, such as:
* Machine down, (can't write if machine is down!)
* Replication halted,
* Replication delayed,
* Query running a long time,
* max_connections hit,
* Out of disk space, (without disk space, can't write to log!)
* CPU busy,
* etc.
Some of those are not necessarily "critical". (Delayed; long time; busy)
