I get many requests each month for companies looking for MySQL DBAs. The training course is a good starting point but there is a high component of skill learned only by long exposure to running the database, having things go wrong, and then correcting them. You often learn more by screwing things up and learning how to recover from that catastrophe. (so learn to do backups with a variety of tools and restoring everything from a full database to a single row as it is good training and help you recover from mistakes).

If you do desire to work remotely, make sure you have email/phone skills sufficient to be able to carry out the job. Clarity and succinctness are paramount.

And remember we all started at step 0 and you can do it too.
