Seriously, most tables do not have the type of activity that benefit from OPTIMIZE. MyISAM tables can get more fragmented than InnoDB tables. You are using InnoDB, aren't you?

The BTrees in InnoDB are, to a large extent, self adjusting. That is, they rarely get so fragmented that it is worth doing OPTIMIZE.

Numbers? I would say only one table in a thousand _ever_ needs defragmenting. And then only once a month.
