John, I was expecting advices, too. But so far nothing.

Tried to get around this problem with off-the-shelf front-end,
MS Query and OOo Base. Did not make it. MySQL SQL Browser cannot
replace front-end apps since it does not support form or report
functions. It even fails to handle multi-byte characters in SQL
statement.

I would suggest you use odbc 3.51 and mysqld 4.0 so long
as they work. Otherwise front-end apps have to be re-written.

BTW, the release note of odbc 5.1.5 says it will NOT work on
mysqld 4.0 or earlier releases. For your info.
