Matt is correct. We are going to number our connectors so it's clear that if you want feature X that is specific to version Z of the server then you need version Z of the connector. The connectors will always be backward compatible.

It's a bit confusing but it will clear up as we get farther down our roadmap. The upcoming 1.0.8 will work with all MySQL versions up to and including 5.1. Connector 5.0 is a significant upgrade to the 1.0 line. We will start releasing builds of connector 5.1 when 5.0 goes GA.
