VS tools - New Connection disappears

I have created a sandbox app to play around with MySql and its supporting tools.

I was successful in manually creating a connection to and getting data from my database.

This evening I discovered the VS Tools add-in. I downloaded and installed it. Sure enough, when I go to server explorer and click add new, there is now an option to create a new MySql database connection.

When I select that option, the dialog appears asking for server name, userid, etc. As soon as I type in ANY of the text boxes, the dialog disappears!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times, and even got the installer from a different mirror, but the results are the same.

Searching didn't find anyone else with this problem. Any smart people out there with some ideas?
