Did you ever get a resolution to this issue, other than down-grading back to .NETv1.1?
I am also experiencing this issue. I've tried closing the connection, setting the connection and any datareader/adapter that ever used it all to 'null'; nothing seems to tell the MySQL server to release the thread. The thread on the server never exits until the client-side application exits.
