Connector J 5.1.5 and NetBeans 5.5.1 can't add a connection

Hi! I have a problem with NetBeans:
after unpacking drivers (Connector J 5.1.5) and adding them to my application (from the runtime window), I can't get a connection to any of my databases, getting this error:
unable to add connection, cannot establish connection to jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/<<databaseName>> using com.mysql.jdbc.Driver (Communication link failure
Last packet sent to the server was 0 ms ago.).
Note: I am using MySQL 5 for PcLinuxOS 2007.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thanks.
