Troubles with accessing remote database

Hello,
I am trying to access my MySQL database from a remote client using Java with JDBC, but haven't been too successful yet. I am running Windows 7 on the server and Mac OSX Lion on the client. I read that I had to remove the binding address line in the my.cnf or the my.ini files, but I don't seem to have a my.cnf file, and my my.ini file has no such line. The next step in the tutorial(s) i saw for this was granting all privileges to my user on the client with the command line client, so I tried that and it said query ok. I tried connecting again from the remote machine, but the Java program I had just sat there and did nothing. What should I do?
