Thanks for the reply, yes I understand all that and yes, we have a proper pool manager that keeps a list of PooledConnections to hand out.

As I said in my second post, the sockets aren't being closed immediately as I originally thought. They get closed a short while later, maybe about 15 seconds. I would like to increase this timeout so they socket is kept open a bit longer. Is there a configuration setting to do this. I've looked through the list, but can't find anything that suggests it does this.
