Oops! Those should be backslashes (\"$l_name\") .
Suggestion for newbies:
1. Read the entire manual.
2. Pay attention to the functions. You don't need to memorize the details, but you do need to know what's available.
3. Don't confuse your Perl code with your SQL.
4. Get a lot of practice.
