DBI character encoding

Hi
I'm trying to store swedish characters (åäö) in a iso-latin1 string fetched from xml-file in latin 1, from Perl to Mysql where the .pl-file is encoded in latin 1, the shell is in latin 1 and all Mysql character variables are set to latin 1. Everything seems to be in iso latin 1 but I still can't get åäö stored in the database and it looks like this "åäö" I running out of ideas and have searched lots of forums with no success. The environment is Mac os x snow leopard and I'm problably an idiot.
Someone who can enlighten this?
