Perhaps the biggest performance improvement in 5.6 that affects this forum is an optimization of "IN (SELECT ...)". (It, or a similar fix, has already been released in MariaDB.)
"ICP" also helps. (Again, MariaDB beat them to the punch.)
Better usage of more cores. (About 48 is now the peak.)
"Install on Windows in 3 minutes", plus performance boosts for Windows.
GTIDs (Global Transaction IDs) is possibly a step toward easily promoting a Slave and easily repointing other Slaves to that new Master.
