PHP - MySQL

As a REAL Newbie I took pride in standing up an IIS server and having it process PHP code, but I'm stuck at getting SQL functions in PHP to be understood. I successfully installed MySQL but it almost seems as if PHP doesn't know what to do with a function like mysql_connect (from a tutorial on SQL). Is there something I need to do to link the two components? I get a "Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect() in F:\web\index.php on line 6" error.

Something I need to read? thanks
