Being a long time VMware user, it's just another host on the network as
far as TCP/IP is concerned. I've run MySQL instances in it and reached it from
Linux and run MySQL on Linux (mostly) and reached it from VMware.
(as long as both sides agree on what IP maps to what hostname or you're using %).

Also, you have not mentioned any log traces. What is in the MySQL DB side
logs on Linux? It should show a connection attempt at least, possibly more.

and not to be redundent, but can the MySQL client connect at the command
line level from the non-DB hosting machine(s)? Maybe a grants issue??
