MySQL error message

Trying to run a script to transfer my phpBB forum into a Nuke 7.8 new installation but when I run the script I get the following problem.
Couldn't connect to - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (46)
What does this mean?
The phpBB config file was autogenerated by yahoo hosting, whereas the Nuke install was done manually, so the parameters ie...user name, passwords are different for each of these databases.
