Hi,

My advice is to try and use an ETL tool to perform the task you are talking about. Look at tools from Talend or Pentaho: you are able to migrate tables from Mssql to MySQL rather easily. Talend has over 500 connectors to work with, so that will let you connect many -if not all- databases we know. Pentaho must have about that many too.
What's nice also is that once you've started using those tools, you can learn about data quality, data management, etc... so there's room to grow.
