нет никакой разницы в использовании конструкции USING(field) и t1.field=t2.field в данном случае. Using в джоинах работает, когда имена полей обеих таблиц совпадают. Иначе необходимо использовать:
t1.field1=t2.field2
..как по мне using смотрится красивее и читабельнее.
