Roland, don't you seem to remember that EXISTS did indeed work in SPs?

I guess I was mistaken, though I seem to remember it working. What version of MySQL are you using? Also, did you realize that there is no reason at all to use the EXISTS as you have it in the stored procedure. If the UPDATE statement does not find any records for the WHERE condition, nothing will happen.
